CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Beast Boy (Garfield Mark Logan)
AGE: 15ish
CANON: Teen Titans (Animated)

CANON HISTORY: Wiki
CANON PERSONALITY: Beast Boy very much embodies the 'teen' in Teen Titans. The youngest member - and, well, the scrawniest - he serves as the main source of comic relief in the series and attempts to keep his close friends grounded in reality. Or grounded in immaturity, as the case may be. They’re superheroes, but they’re still teens, after all. He tells puerile jokes, enjoys acting like the class clown, plays video games nonstop, and is unable to resist wisecracks even in the middle of intensely serious situations. He delights in horror movies and has bizarre flights of fantasies that usually involve killer robot clones invading from Mars. His life’s mission is to make Raven crack a smile, which he has only ever accomplished once to date. The only way to snap him out of hypnosis is to do something that a teenager would find funny – burp, say dirty words, crack stupid jokes, etc. In short... Beast Boy is just like any other typical teenager. He's a little wisecracking turd who just happens to fight crime on the side.

And perhaps also like any other typical teen kid, Beast Boy’s antics are mostly for the sake of attracting attention. It’s hard for a green, pointy-eared superhero to make friends easily, and while Beast Boy would love to be at the center of a huge crowd of friends and acquaintances, it’s pretty much impossible under the circumstances. So he settles for making his close friends laugh, instead. Above anything else, he wants to be liked and loved and appreciated, and s despite his constant good humor, he might very well be the most insecure member of the team. Even when his friends have very legitimate reasons to be too busy to spend time with him, he feels abandoned and lonely very easily. This once makes him seek out companionship on his own, leading to him... being abducted by aliens. This doesn't really help his loneliness any. It's pretty clear that Beast Boy’s jokes are laughter are often there just to mask his own insecurities. If people are laughing with him, then they don't have the time to laugh at him.

This particular weakness of his shines through in his interactions with Terra - and this relationship certainly demonstrates a lot about Beast Boy and the way he operates as well. Though it’s clear that Beast Boy found her attractive, it’s equally clear that they were drawn together because they were kindred souls. Beast Boy lost his parents in an accident and blames himself for not being able to use his abilities well enough to save them; Terra is unable to control her powers and causes chaos wherever she goes. Both characters put up a front to cover their more sensitive natures – Beast Boy with his jokes, and Terra with a gung-ho, energetic attitude. Both search earnestly for people they can call friends. Beast Boy easily recognized this in Terra, and when he realized she was putting on a front for his benefit, he often sought to reassure her that they would always be true friends. But while Beast Boy found the Teen Titans early on in his career (and before that, the Doom Patrol), Terra was too broken from her years of running to be able to trust so easily, leading to the terrible events of her betrayal.

This difference between them and their disparate upbringings also highlights another of Beast Boy’s traits: he has learned to be intensely kindhearted, even at expense to himself. While Terra seeks to protect herself at all costs, Beast Boy is willing to put himself on the line for the sake of others. This doesn't mean he isn't human, though - He tells Terra 'you have no friends' when she betrays the team, in anger and in pain. But in his subsequent interactions, he urges his team members to give Terra another chance despite what she did. Again and again, even when he himself accepts that Terra is a criminal who must be stopped, he once again turns sympathetic the instance he notices Terra in pain. Beast Boy’s compassion shows up time and again, no matter how macho and tough he tries to act – when he believes Starfire to have been hurt or killed by Thunder and Lightning, when he stays behind to save Raven from her demonic inner self, and of course, in his refusal to eat animals due to his innate sympathy.

The other aspects of Beast Boy's personality are generally pretty straightforward and also fairly normal for a teenaged boy. He admires ‘coolness’ quite a lot and desperately wishes for a moped to achieve the height of cool (he also believes himself to be cool, pointing out that ‘chicks dig pointy ears’), he becomes jealous and competitive very easily as seen in his interactions with Aqualad, and he has a strong sense of responsibility for things that he feels are his fault - such as Starfire's injury and the fate of his parents. Somewhat in parallel with this, though, he has difficulty in fessing up to his mistakes. When he does recognize his own failings, he's extremely apologetic, but it can be difficult for him to reach that point, likely because he self-flagellates himself so badly.

Near the end of the series, Beast Boy undergoes a great deal of character development. When responsibility is thrust unwillingly upon him, he is forced to become a more mature, more competent hero capable of being a leader. Likely, this was always present behind his lighthearted nature and his antics. He never wanted to rise up to lead - maturity is confusing and terrifying and too much for him to want to take on. But the final battle against the Brotherhood of Evil helps him truly understand why it was that he lived the life he did - not because he was raised by superheroes or because he had known no other life, but because of a genuine desire to help those who were in need. And if that takes shouldering on more responsibility... then so be it.

SKILLS/ABILITIES: The side-effect of some combination of a deadly disease and an attempted cure, Beast Boy has the ability to transform into any animal he has ever seen, regardless of whether or not it still exists. Or ever existed. Mythical animals are fair game. And even more bizarre things - Despite the fact that most microbes aren't technically animals, Beast Boy can also turn into an amoeba. He has a strong preference for dinosaurs, though.

Beast Boy can’t talk in his animal forms, though telepaths and other animals of the same species can communicate with him.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Garfield Mark Logan (nickname: Gar)
AU AGE: 15
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Major differences! Beast Boy is not green, for one thing. Especially since green seems to be in limbo right now in the city. Beast Boy will resemble what he would have looked like canonically if he didn't have his serious medical accident: he will have red hair and green eyes and freckles, coming from a Scottish family. No pointy teeth or ears. Still small and wiry and not terribly physically impressive.

AU HISTORY: Garfield Logan was born to two genius scientists who he never really knew much about. They were famous geneticists who traveled the world, visiting exotic, far-off locations like the depths of the Amazon in their studies of rare primate genetics and behavior. His parents never took him along on these trips until he was about five years old. Mostly, he recalls staying in the hotels in the country in question and being looked after by his parents' assistants, as his parents reassured him that one day he'd be old enough to come with them.

One day at the age of five, he begged and whined until his parents agreed to let him accompany them on a much less intensive trip - a rafting trip down on a river they had traversed many times before. Pleased and excited, Garfield was sandwiched between his parents and off they went to visit some of the locations where they had set up camera traps for photographs of nocturnal animal behavior.

Then there was a flash flood.

Garfield doesn't remember much of anything except being thrown towards the shore by his father. His parents' bodies were never recovered. For a long time, his fate was uncertain until close friends of his parents, also scientists, decided that they were willing to adopt him. The adoption was finalized quickly, and given his young age, Garfield adapted to the fact that he was getting a new family soon enough. His adoptive parents were based in Recollé, also studying genetics, and he began his new life. The one perhaps atypical thing was that his adoptive parents kept his original surname - they had been close friends of his birth parents and wanted their son to one day look into his roots.

His time growing up in Recollé has been unremarkable, and Garfield developed into a typical teen. Despite the fact that both his birth and adoptive parents were highly gifted intellectuals, Garfield is... not. Through his teen years, he quickly demonstrated that he was bright, but had no particular interest in applying himself. This caused his adoptive parents no end of concern, and despite that they have pushed him to try harder, he just isn't very interested in academics. Garfield prefers, instead, in order: video games, surfing the Internet, pretending he can play guitar, hanging with his bros, yelling at people to not call him Garfield, performing backflips off the roof and posting it to Recollé Vine, and otherwise being a bit of an obnoxious teenager. His parents are holding out hope he'll grow up a bit eventually.

One of the few constructive activities Garfield engages in, though, is amateur martial arts. Despite that he's not terribly heroic in this world, Garfield had always been scrappy, growing up, and year after year, found himself facing off with various bullies in school. He had a knack for either becoming a target himself or befriending other kids who were being tormented and subsequently kicking the snot out of the schoolyard tormentors. His parents, fed up with this, decided that he needed to learn some discipline and eventually sent him off to an aikido dojo to learn how to fight properly and to get control of himself. He took to it quite well and has various friends and acquaintances related to this activity.

Entering his second year of high school, Garfield has a lot of growing up to do and a lot to discover about himself.

AU PERSONALITY: Not being a superhero in this reality, Garfield has some major tweaks to the way he behaves.

Garfield has no physical discipline. He was never subjected to the back-breaking training that Mento and the Doom Patrol forced him through, and despite how much he hated that treatment, without it, he never learned how to harness his wildness and emotions properly. He has a natural talent for fighting and a good build for it, but he's headstrong and has no control over himself. The aikido training is helping him become an actual fighter, but it's far removed from working every day as a superhero.

On the flip side, he's actually less of a slob and less cartoonishly childish in his daily life. His lack of discipline in things like keeping his room clean, eating regularly, being a competent human being, etc. was a reaction to his backbreaking training as a child. Since he never received it and he only received normal discipline from his parents, he's more... evened out in this regard. He cares a little bit more about appearances and not coming across like a lazy child. In part, this is also because...

He's not an outcast based on his appearance. He can make friends and be the center of attention, and actually, he's reasonably popular among the other boys. He's a complete loser with female attention, as is normal, but not having to try so hard to be liked and accepted allows him to be more relaxed and less attention-seeking with his friends. He still wisecracks and jokes constantly, but it isn't happening due to his deep-seated insecurities. Just... mild insecurities. He's a normal kid with normal problems, and though he can still be the class clown, it won't be quite as extreme.

Despite not being a superhero in this reality, though, he still has a strong sense of justice, and actually, in some ways, is more actively looking for justice. Because he's not quite so insecure, he can be more bold and brash about sticking up for people who can't help themselves. He's also not on a team, so anything he wants to accomplish has to be done himself. In school, he'll often stick his nose into affairs that aren't his business and get himself beat up for his troubles - this is the reason his parents eventually sent him off to learn martial arts.

Finally, he has more of an opportunity here to explore interests that aren't relevant to superhero-ing, so his budding interests in things like music (he still sucks) and paleontology (dinosaurs are still cool) may be better developed.

SAMPLE

(Written sample!)

bro. bro. bro. what do i do

He is furiously texting his friends. Three days ago, Olivia who sat next to him on the bus had looked vaguely in his direction and the edges of her lips had moved in a way that could be interpreted as maybe upwards, if you squinted. He was pretty sure it was a smile at him? Like, 85% sure? Upon a hurried consultation with five of his peers, they had quickly reached a consensus decision in a few seconds that ended with a lot of high-fives.

Bro, she's totally into you.

It was not the first time he had felt a connection with Olivia. Two months ago, she had asked to borrow his pencil (and like, she could have asked anyone in class even if they did sit next to each other in math), and once last year - he was pretty sure it was Olivia, it might have been Katie G. - she had picked up one of his dropped homework assignments that he'd doodled on and she'd laughed at the T. Rex eating the teacher.

crap bro what do i do she's noticed me looking

The reply he received could be generously translated as 'Grow a pair and ask her out, you dumbbell', though much cruder.

Garfield turns as red as his hair (why did he have red hair? chicks hated red hair), and as Olivia begins to frown, he takes a breath and strides up closer to her locker.

"Heyyy Olivia. ...Yoooooo. Uh..."

(god who said 'yo' anymore?)

Olivia responds with a greeting, and her eyes flick up towards the clock. There are three minutes before class starts. She asks what he thought of the math homework last night. It had been pretty rough. He wouldn't know, because he hadn't done it. Did he get question fifteen?

"Y-Yeah, it was freaking... bull! Can't believe they're hammering us right before Thanksgiving... Bro, I'm not doing this much work two days before vacation, ya know?"

(fuck fuck fuck he just called a girl 'bro')

"Hey, uh - Speaking of vacation." (great segue, garfield) "You know the, uh. The fall dance on Friday? ...What? I said -- I, uh, said... Fall. Dance. The falldance. Yeah. I was wo -- Oh, your grandparents? Oh, yeah, that makes sense. Totally. Yeah, gotta... gotta spend time with the family. Huh?! N-No I wasn't ask -- No just... wondering if I would see you there! But I won't, because, you won't."

Olivia smiles. He's pretty sure she's laughing at him. He finger-guns and walks backwards into a water fountain.

"Yep! Have a great Thanksgiving!"

Garfield power walks away, his face still the color of his hair, in the opposite and wrong direction. Olivia calls after him - math was next, the bell was about to ring - where was he going?

"Bathroom!"

He realizes too late that he is pushing open the door with the stick figure in a dress.
